Woodbine is Moving to Manhattan!
Woodbine is Moving to Manhattan! After a dozen years in Ridgewood, we are excited to announce that Woodbine is opening up a new space at 414 Broadway. In the time of Trump 2.0, and following the historic mayoral victory of Zohran Mamdani, we decided it was time to start a new chapter. Located at the crossroads of Tribeca, SoHo, and Chinatown – and within walking distance to 10 different subway lines – our new space will put Woodbine's programming in direct dialogue with the entire city.
Within our current context of deepened political polarization, the rapid collapse of America's higher education system, and a widespread loneliness epidemic, it's vitally urgent that we maintain in-person space to meet, learn, and experiment together. Now we plan to do that work on Broadway in Manhattan.
Since 2014 Woodbine has described itself as "an experimental hub for developing the practices, skills, and tools needed to build autonomy. We host workshops, lectures, discussions and serve as a meeting and organizing space." More than a decade later, we continue to see ourselves as something between a think tank, a free university, a lecture hall, a cinema, a salon, and more.
We want to collaborate with and learn from autonomous and countercultural movements; political and artistic avant-gardes; and utopian communities. Working to build preparedness and power, using the frameworks of both resilience and revolution, our emphasis is on strategic planning to navigate the world around us.
Help Us Build Woodbine 3.0! This will be a major change for us, and we'll need your support to bring this ambitious vision to life. We need help to pay for the security deposit, moving costs, renovations, new furniture and supplies, an updated audio-visual system, and more. We'll need to hire movers, carpenters, and electricians, as well as build up a financial cushion to stay on top of our increased monthly overhead expenses. Our immediate fundraising goal is $50,000.
As always, we are grateful for our community's ongoing financial support, and appreciate any end-of-year contributions you are able to make as we begin this next chapter. We first opened our doors in Ridgewood, Queens at 1882 Woodbine Street back in January 2014. In November 2020, in the aftermath of our community organizing in response to the Covid pandemic, we moved to 585 Woodward Avenue. That location will continue on as an autonomous community center and mutual aid hub, now known as Ridgewood Commons. Many of the neighborhood programs and working groups that Woodbine developed and facilitated will continue to operate out of the Ridgewood Commons. Last fall we signed a 10-year lease extension at 585 Woodward, and we're grateful that our expanded community is in a position to sustain both of these spaces.
